  • Fayyaz Hussain Scholarship for IDS and GLIS Freshmen and Sophomores

Dr. Fayyaz Hussain has sponsored a scholarship for freshmen and sophomore students majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science (IDS) and Global and International Studies in Social Science (GLIS).

At least one scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded each fall semester. Applications open each spring.

The scholarship is intended to encourage students who have demonstrated the following:
    - The capacity to achieve educational and professional goals
    - The motivation to achieve these goals
    - The initiative to seek opportunities to further their progress

IDS and GLIS majors with fewer than 56 cumulative credits earned at the start of each spring semester are eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate high financial need, be Michigan residents, and submit an essay (one page maximum) explaining why you chose your major and how this scholarship would further your educational or professional goals. The scholarships are competitive and not all applicants will receive one.

Submission of an application gives the selection committee permission to review the student’s academic and financial aid records.

Please check back in January 2027 for application information.

  • A. J. Harris Field Experience Scholarship

A.J. Harris II was a 1965 graduate of the IDS program. He established a scholarship fund for Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science (IDS) and Global and International Studies in Social Science (GLIS) majors to help them gain real-world field experience.

The scholarship is available to all students with a first, second, or additional major in IDS or GLIS who are planning a field experience. Field experiences can include internships, study away, and study abroad programs if they are for credit. If you are not sure if your experience qualifies for this scholarship, please discuss it with your academic advisor to be sure.

The application requires: 1) submission of a current resume or curriculum vitae, 2) a letter of recommendation from someone who can speak to your academic or professional achievements, 3) a one-page essay in which you discuss your hopes for your field experience and how it aligns with your professional goals, and 4) a brief budget that outlines the expenses you will incur through participation in the program.

The scholarships are competitive and not all applicants will receive one. Recipients will be selected based on academic achievement and experiences, relation of program to professional goals, and financial need.

Submission of an application gives the selection committee permission to review the student’s academic and financial aid records.

Please check back in September 2026 for application information.
