Global and International Studies

 

The Global and International Studies in Social Science major (GLIS) guides students through an exploration of a world region or topic of interest through the lens of multiple social science disciplines. Throughout the curriculum, students are provided opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary thinking and conduct research. Graduates are well prepared for ongoing study and careers around the globe.

Available world region concentrations are:

  • Asian Studies

    The Asian Studies concentration explores the diverse cultures, histories, and political systems of Asia, from East and South Asia to Southeast and Central Asia. Students gain insights into the region’s economic growth, cultural transformations, and geopolitical significance. Coursework may include topics like international relations and contemporary issues shaping Asia today.

  • Canadian Studies

    Canadian Studies provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding Canada’s unique cultural, political, and economic landscape. Students examine topics such as Indigenous perspectives, bilingualism, environmental policy, and Canada’s role in global affairs. This concentration offers valuable insights into the country’s historical and contemporary relationships with its neighbors and the world.

  • European and Russian Studies

    Focusing on Europe and Russia, this concentration explores the region’s history, politics, and cultures, from the European Union to post-Soviet transformations. Students analyze key themes such as democracy, nationalism, and economic integration. This area of study provides a deeper understanding of Europe and Russia’s evolving roles in global affairs.

  • Global Health

    The Global Health concentration examines health challenges and disparities across nations, focusing on policies, interventions, and ethical considerations. Students explore topics like pandemics, health equity, and international healthcare systems. This interdisciplinary approach prepares students to address pressing global health issues in public health, policy, or humanitarian settings.

  • Integrative Studies

    Selecting a concentration in Integrative Studies allows students to select an interdisciplinary global topic of their own interest. Students can design a plan of study with their academic advisor and faculty mentor around a research topic to address a complex global issue the requires a unique perspective to address.

  • International Development

    International Development explores efforts to reduce global poverty, promote economic growth, and enhance social welfare. Students analyze development theories, humanitarian aid, and sustainability initiatives. The concentration equips students with the tools to critically assess and contribute to global development strategies.

  • Latin American and Caribbean Studies

    This concentration delves into the histories, cultures, and political landscapes of Latin America and the Caribbean. Students examine topics like colonial legacies, social movements, and economic development. With a focus on regional dynamics and global connections, this area of study fosters a nuanced understanding of Latin American and Caribbean societies.

  • Middle Eastern and African Studies
    Middle Eastern and African Studies explores the rich histories, cultures, and political structures of these diverse regions. Students analyze topics such as colonial legacies, religious and ethnic identities, and contemporary conflicts. This concentration provides a broad perspective on the historical and modern challenges shaping these parts of the world.
  • Migration Studies

    The Migration Studies concentration investigates the causes, consequences, and policies surrounding human migration. Students explore topics such as refugee crises, labor migration, and diaspora communities. This field of study prepares students to engage with pressing global issues related to mobility, borders, and social integration.
