The Center for Integrative Studies in Social Science is thrilled to congratulate Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) major students Amina Darabie, Ari Andres, and Bailey Griffin for winning first place in their respective UURAF 2023 categories. MSU's University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF) showcases research from across MSU each spring, and it is a great honor to be selected as first place winners in individual categories. This achievement demonstrates the meaningful, impactful, and rigorous work of our IDS students. Way to go!!!
Bailey Griffin is a sophomore at MSU who is double majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies-Liberal Studies and African & African American Studies. In partnership with mentor Dr. Walter Hawthorne and peer student Lorenzo Duran Charris, Bailey's UURAF project titled, "Death in Fairfax County, Virginia, in the mid-19th Century: Morbidity and Mortality among Enslaved and Free Populations" won first place in the General Social Science category. Her vital contribution brought a Black feminist lens to the data where she explored the concept of misogynoir.
MSU seniors Amina Darabie and Ari Andres are both Interdisciplinary Studies-Liberal Studies majors in the Center for Integrative Studies, and they won first place in the UURAF Interdisciplinary Films category. Their project explored the benefits and challenges of farmers markets in the Lansing area. Their respective contributions to this 2 year documentary project investigated community connections and experiential design in music at area farmers markets. Their film is titled "Documenting Barriers and Benefits in Lansing's Farmers' Markets."
